Natural Ways To Relieve Sinus Pressure and Congestion

Sinus congestion can turn an otherwise perfect day upside down. The pain, inflammation, and general discomfort can drive a person crazy. Thankfully, however, there are some natural ways to relieve nasal pressure and congestion.

Humidifier

You might be surprised to learn that a humidifier can relieve sinus pressure. Many people experience nasal congestion during the winter because of the dry air. Low humidity causes the sensitive mucus membranes lining the nasal passage to dry out and even crack, resulting in painful inflammation. This inflammation squeezes the nasal passage together, making it difficult to breath through your nose.

Self-Massage

The next time you wake up in the morning with severe nasal congestion, try massaging the groove between your eyes. You can do this using either one or or both of your index fingers. Simply press down on the groove and gently turn your finger back and forth. This type of self-massage promotes blood flow to the region, while also breaking up the congestion inside the nasal passages.

Note: you can also massage the sides of your upper nose (directly below the brow) to relieve sinus pressure and congestion.

Pineapple

In addition to its delicious taste, pineapple contains a powerful inflammation-fighting compound known as bromelain. Studies suggest that bromelain can relieve sinus congestion, while also speeding up the recovery time of upper respiratory infections. “Bromelain appears to be beneficial and helps reduce swelling in the nasal passages,” said Lenox Hill Dr. Robert Graham. And in the unlikely event that you aren’t a fan of pineapple, you can always opt for a bromelain supplement instead. Just remember to talk with your doctor before starting any new supplement regimen, as bromelain may interact with other medications.

Fluids

Sometimes there’s no better cure for nasal pressure and congestion than drinking good old fashioned water, and lot’s of it. When you’re dehydrated, even mildly, your mucus membranes will dry out, similar to the effect of a low-humidity environment. By drinking H2O, however, your mucus membranes will stay moist, preventing inflammation.

Water isn’t the only beverage that’s beneficial when you’re suffering from nasal congestion. Freshly brewed green tea is also known to ease congestion and inflammation. Green tea is one of the oldest forms of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to date, and it remains a popular remedy for a variety of ailments, only one of which is nasal congestion.
