Top Foods For Healthy Hair

salmon-012The food you eat plays a critical role in a number of bodily functions, including the hair. People who consume empty-calorie foods (foods with calories but no real nutritional value) are more likely to suffer from weak/frail hair, split-ends, poor coloring, and other problems with their hair. So, which foods you should consume for a healthy head of hair?

Foods To Avoid

Consuming too much sodium will place extra stress on your body’s immune system, so try to cut out excessive fast food, potato chips, popcorn and anything else that’s loaded with sodium. When your body has to focus on fending off foreign invaders, it wont have the resources necessary to grow healthy hair.

Diets high in sugar are also linked to poor-growing hair. It’s unknown why exactly this is, but some believe it’s because sugar suppresses many functions of the body, causing it to shift the focus from your hair to other areas.

Eggs

A recent study revealed that individuals who consume diet high in eggs had healthier, fuller hair. There are a few possible reasons for these results, one of which is the high content of protein. The average egg has about 6 to 7 grams of protein, and most individuals consume at least 2 to 3 eggs in one serving, so that’s a whopping 20 plus grams of protein in a sitting.

Another reason why eggs promote healthy hair growth is their high content of a Vitamin B compound known as biotin. This compound is necessary for proper cell growth, including hair, and the metabolic process of fats and proteins. When it’s combined with the protein in the eggs, you get a powerhouse of nutrition.

Fish

If you want to get the full benefits fish has to offer, you must choose ones that are rich in oils and nutrients. Typically, the more colorful the fish is, the more nutrients it contains. Salmon and rainbow trout are two deliciously healthy fish that you really can’t go wrong with. So, what makes them beneficial for hair health and growth? The fish oils and Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids work to moisturize and promote proper hair growth.

Fruit and Vegetables

Of course, you shouldn’t overlook the importance of fruit and vegetables in your diet if you want healthy hair. Even if you take a multivitamin, there’s still no substitute for the pure nutrients and vitamins provided by nature’s own fruits and vegetables. A good rule of thumb is to try and eat a “colorful” mix of fruits and veggies throughout the day. The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends consuming 2 cups of fruit and 2 ½ cups of vegetables per day.
